Unlock Your Best Holiday: Small Preps, Big Rewards

Dreaming of that bucket list trip to Australia or a relaxing week at a resort?

Travel is an incredible opportunity to see the world, learn about nature, broaden your mindset, and truly connect with loved ones outside of your daily routine.

The key to unlocking these unforgettable experiences? Being prepared. While unexpected obstacles like illness, jet lag, or delayed flights can pop up, being organized and ready for them will make your holiday infinitely more enjoyable. Plus, tapping into local insights from friends, tour guides, or knowledgeable travelers can elevate your trip from good to amazing.

In this first article of our “Travel Smart” series, let’s start with some fundamental tips to ensure your next adventure is smooth sailing.

Essential Gear for Sun & Sight

Protecting yourself from the elements is paramount, especially when exploring new environments.

  • Respect the Sun: Sunburn can quickly derail a trip. Always pack sunscreen (aim for SPF 30 minimum, higher near the equator like SPF 50) and a variety of hats. A cover-up is also a smart addition – it offers extra sun protection and doubles as a convenient transition piece from the beach to a casual cafe. And remember to stay hydrated: always carry a reusable water bottle!
  • Guard Your Eyes: Don’t underestimate the importance of UV-protected sunglasses. Many older pairs might not offer adequate protection. Look for labels that explicitly state “100% protection against both UVA and UVB” or “100% protection against UV 400.” If you’re unsure about your current shades, a quick (and often free!) check at an optometrist’s clinic can confirm their effectiveness in under 30 seconds.

Happy Feet, Happy Travels

Nothing ruins a day of exploring faster than sore feet!

  • Invest in Comfort: Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. Break them in by wearing them for at least a week of regular walks at home before your trip.
  • Emergency Foot Care: Pack extra moleskin, bunion, and/or corn pads. It’s also worth investing in high-quality shoes that truly fit your foot’s unique arch and shape. Different shoe “lasts” (the mold they’re built on) suit different foot types, so finding the right fit can prevent a lot of discomfort.

Lessons from Our Travels: Staying Comfortable & Healthy

My husband, David, often faces challenges regulating his system while traveling. On our trip to Australia last year, he dealt with frequent migraines, headaches, painful feet, and bouts of low blood sugar. These experiences highlighted the importance of proactive planning:

  • Medication on Hand: We always ensure we have extra migraine medication to manage his more frequent episodes when traveling.
  • Fueling Up Regularly: Monitoring low blood sugar is crucial. David often says, “I’m fine, I can skip lunch,” but I’ve learned to insist on regular snacks and meals. Sometimes, I’ll even pretend I’m hungry (whether I am or not!) just to ensure we stop for food. We both feel better when we’re properly fueled.
  • Portable Comfort: For long flights or exploring where seating might be scarce, we found inflatable seat cushions to be invaluable. They provide comfort on hard surfaces like pavement or rocks, and even make long flights more bearable. (We initially brought collapsible stools but found the cushions more practical!)

Be Present, Not Just Posting

With today’s focus on social media, it’s easy to get caught up in capturing the “perfect shot.” But remember to simply be in the moment. Take a selection of photos and videos, of course, but truly experience the place. Engage all five of your senses. Trust your gut if it signals a risk or nudges you to try something new. I truly believe you miss life’s most precious moments if you’re constantly looking through a screen.

Travel is a privilege – and sometimes, a challenge! By being prepared, you can significantly limit the pain points and maximize the joy.
